Mari Companion

Mari Companion (American, b. 1985 Portsmouth NH) is an artist whose work explores themes of health, self-love, vulnerability, and our digital relationship with portraiture. They earned a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design (2007) and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (2011). Their own personal experiences are a driving force into the pursuit of these subjects. Such as narratives about their experiences with chronic illness and self-image to better understand our relationship with contemporary culture.

The work is primarily done in oil paint with vibrant colors and contrast. Most of the paintings are made up of portraiture. Their other main medium is video which they use to create Film Stills. These are film stills are about living with various disabilities.

Mari’s work has been exhibited at SIY Gallery, San Francisco, Helios Fine Art, Las Vegas, Van Der Plas Gallery, NYC, Litchenstein Center for the Arts, MA, and Art Basel, Miami, with a future exhibition planned at Danforth Museum of Art in MA.

Mari’s work was featured in ‘All Together Now,’ on view February 11-26, 2023.

Owned and operated by Rochester Museum of Fine Arts co-founder, Amy Regan, See Saw Art features invitational and open call exhibitions on a monthly basis.
