Daniela Flint (b. 1994, Boston, MA) is an artist and curator in Newbury, Massachusetts. She received her bachelor’s degree from Maine College of Art. Her practice challenges the viewer to question how value is established and how it is perceived personally. As a Latinx artist her art practice also references cultural duality of her lived experience as a Brazilian-American. Daniela’s curatorial work focuses on developing opportunities for underrepresented artistic movements and supporting the work of LatinX artists.

“This exhibition examines how value is perceived, constructed, and culturally assigned. In these paintings I am utilizing the motifs from genre painting and applying that to the imagery found in grocery flyers. During the 18th century there was an increased demand for work that reflected the new found wealth of the Netherland’s middle class. Painters were interested in the use of still life to depict the symbolic themes of vanity and to flaunt technical abilities.

By re-contextualizing contemporary commercial imagery through the frameworks of Baroque still life, I aim to question how painting has historically participated in defining what is considered valuable. If traditional still life celebrated objects of material luxury, then what constitutes personal wealth today? And what does it mean to elevate disposable, mass-circulated images of consumer goods into the realm of fine art? Through this tension, the work considers how systems of value continue to shift and how imagery continues to shape our understanding of worth.”
