Deonna Janone

Deonna Janone (b. 1981, Atlanta, GA) is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and former educator who has lived in the Atlanta area for most of her life. While completing her Masters degree in the area of social policy and urban studies, Deonna began to teach herself painting techniques. What started as a way to approach academic research and the people it represented more holistically, launched a studio practice that is still going strong almost two decades later. Deonna’s paintings are intuitive and layered, with colors influenced by nature and the written word. She frequently begins a painting with a question or hypothesis in mind. Painting is her exploration and testing, with the finished work as a visual testament to the value of curiosity and observation. Her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally for over a decade. She has also been awarded multiple grants and residencies, both domestic and international.

Deonna’s work was featured in ‘Group Effort,’ on view August 10-September 1, 2024.

“Both pieces for this show are visual meditation on works of literature that have been deliberately, and distinctively formed by materials from outside my studio.”
