Drew DiPasquale (b. 1986, Bloomsburg, PA) is a lover and observer of both the natural and man-made worlds. He takes inspiration from his environment and tries to understand and interpret the conversations happening between things and systems. Drew is a mostly self-taught artist living and working in Portsmouth and has worked hard to find the right teachers, mentors, and community to fuel his growth. His artistic journey includes study at the Eliot School in Boston, Portsmouth Music and Art Center, and various other random discoveries of learning. Through his non-traditional journey, he’s created an artistic awakening in himself to keep searching and improving on ways to communicate in this increasingly noisy world.
Drew’s work was featured in ‘Distinct Fragments,’ on view July 12-27, 2025.
“These paintings trace moments of my inner life, capturing the unpredictable currents of emotion as they rise, recede, and transform. Each layer of paint represents a collision of synthesis, impulse, and structure. I observe the shifts – from light to dark, fear to courage, past through future – embracing these contradictions as essential to my process.
Through loose, gestural marks, cut outs, photographs, and other mixed-media textures, I engage in an intuitive dialogue where both my conscious mind and subconscious echoes guide my hands. It’s liberating and haunting all at once: an unfolding of raw energy that resists neat categorization.
Emotion is less about tidy sequences and more of a swirling force, boundless and matter-like in its density. In these works, I explore what exists beneath the surface, above judgment, and beyond words. If viewers sense something of their own private landscapes in these gestures, I welcome that resonance. Yet, my purpose remains deeply personal: to stand fully present with whatever arises, to see myself without turning away, and to trust that in this acceptance, some part of the ineffable is made visible.”
Drew’s was featured in ‘Group Effort,’ on view August 10-September 1, 2024.
“In this painting’s glimpse, a solitary figure lies lost in a pastel haze. Influenced by Diebenkorn, the scene reveals a delicate dance of presence and absence, where light and shadow create stark contrasts that question form and space. The tight palette creates a symphony of unseen grace, capturing the fleeting lines of existence and the introspective moments where being and nothingness blur.”
Drew’s work was featured in ‘Glad You Asked,’ on view March 11-26, 2023.
“My current work focuses on an interpretative process to understand the ideas and stories of the structures around us.”
