Katherine Gerwig (b. 1971, Portland, ME) is a mixed media artist and arts educator who grew up in Maine. She attended The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. She currently lives in Portland, Maine. Kate thrives on jumping from one material to another, never settling on one thing for long. She is driven to make work about the experience of being human.
Katherine’s work was featured in ‘Group Effort,’ on view August 10-September 1, 2024.
“Embracing the darker areas of the emotional landscape and finding treasure in others’ trash, my current work uses discarded materials to ask questions about our consume-and-dispose culture and its impact on us and our surroundings.”

“This is from a series of collages titled ‘Talking to Myself,’ about the internal dialogue and its tendencies for both harsh criticism and tender acceptance.”
