Morgan Thomas Shankweiler
Morgan Thomas Shankweiler (b. 1985, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) splits her time between Philadelphia, PA and the coast of Maine. She graduated with sociology and studio art majors from Williams College and studied miniature painting in Jaipur, India.
Her background in sociology informs her work, which examines community, relationships and the commonalities of human experience through metaphoric, pataphysical and aleatoric paintings and interactive installations. Using common linkable units as a visual equalizer, Shankweiler utilizes the language of game play to communicate the context and data-informed confines of a social system.
Shankweiler has been awarded residencies at Peninsula School of Art (WI), ChaNorth(ChaShama), Ellis- Beauregard Foundation(ME), SVA, Penland School of Craft (NC) and Da Vinci Art Alliance (PA) and also works as a portrait painter for MuralArts Philadelphia and a teaching artist (InLiquid, DaVinci Art Alliance, Penland School of Craft). Her award-winning work has been exhibited in solo and group shows and is collected across the continental US and online.
Morgan’s work was featured ‘Wish List’ on view December 9-22, 2023.
