Samantha Johnson

Samantha Johnson (b. 2002, Epping, NH) is an oil painter and art student from Epping, New Hampshire. She recently graduated the Institute of Art and Design at New England College where she was first introduced to oil painting in 2022 and it has been her medium of choice since. Sam comes from a large, tight knit family and finds lots of her inspiration from her siblings and the places her family visits together. With Impressionism being one of her biggest influences she strives to capture ephemeral moments of friends, family, and places important to them in her work. Her hope is too mesh detail and accuracy with painterly qualities to give her paintings a dreamlike atmosphere.

Samantha’s work was featured in ‘Here & There,’ on view March 14-30, 2025.

“Nostalgia is a “wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to some past period or irrecoverable condition”. Samantha focuses on capturing the bittersweet feelings on nostalgia from memories and building them into dreamlike landscapes where the memories can live on. Taking inspiration from the impressionist era; the idea of the ephemeral moment and the use of painterly and expressive brushwork. Samantha uses oil paints to recreate landscapes from important memories with family and friends. To bring memories back to life in a dreamy atmosphere where they can live on. Immortalizing the beauty of nostalgia onto canvases.”

Samantha’s work was featured in ‘Presently‘ on view December 14-22, 2024.

“Both these works were “for fun” sketches that turned into completed works.”

Samantha’s work was featured in ‘Critical Mass,’ on view August 12-27, 2023.

“These three pieces were created with the intention of letting the colored underpainting show through and help create the atmosphere of the painting. Using the intention of letting the underpainting show through as a reminder to not overwork the piece.”
