“In rehearsal. Conductor Roger Kalia, in the moment when Tabla virtuoso Sandeep Das, shares the news that he doesn’t really read the music. The score is more like a scribble of notations. Together, they figure out how to signal the orchestral changes and tabla solo. An orchestra has precise expectations on timing. Precise and accurate are two different concepts. Das made his debut at age 17 with legendary Sitar player Ravi Shankar. For more than 20 years, he has been performing with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.”
