Mark O’Neil

Mark O’Neil (b. 1961, Burlington, IA) is educated in art history and printmaking, and has a deep appreciation for critical application of art history, theory and process. This repeatedly manifests in his work where he applies his knowledge of printmaking, history, and technology to create prints drawn from objects around him whether natural or man-made, but always having a personal connection.
Ultimately, Mark’s art is a celebration. A celebration of color, of form, and of the value of art that is not rooted in personal revelation but, rather, an ode to a universal ethos.
Mark has worked in the field of technology much of his career – mostly in software development – but has recently returned to his first love and area of education in Art History, Printmaking, and Computer Graphics. He uses his understanding of pre-press and printing to play with hand color mixing and non-traditional halftone techniques to create visually impactful prints. He creates hand-printed serigraphs in limited editions and offers various sized giclée prints.
Mark has shown his prints in various regional shows and holds a BA in Liberal Arts from Purdue University with concentrations in Art History, Printmaking, and Computer Graphics.

Mark’s work was featured in ‘Distinct Fragments,’ on view July 12-27, 2025.

“Mark creates under the assumption that art’s primary objective is a celebration of color, form, and the intrinsic value of art that transcends personal revelation and is to be experienced through the viewers personal interpretation. His work serves as an ode to a universal ethos. His work, through the subtle use of form and color, unveils the beauty of the natural world without directly representing it through realism. His signature printmaking technique, a culmination of years of meditation on his artistic vision, draws inspiration from German expressionists, abstract expressionists, pop artists, and color field painters. His artistic journey has led him to emulate a painterly surface in his prints. This is achieved through meticulous editing and combining of his macro-photographic images, employing hand-mixed inks of varying densities to reveal the concealed forms beneath the surface. Each print is produced as a single edition, akin to the creation of a single canvas image by a painter.”
