Less Cooking

Selma never liked cooking. The only thing she knew how to cook before getting married was a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese and hotdogs. But, as a married woman, she’s had to learn. And frankly, she doesn’t like it. Having to plan, prepare, and cook three meals a day, seven days a week, four weeks a month, 12 months a year (or 1,095 meals a year when she does the math) overwhelms her, and this does not even include desserts! Unless her husband takes her out for the occasional pancake breakfast at the International House of Pancakes or club-sandwich lunch at Howard Johnson’s, she cooks. Lately, meal preparation has infiltrated her dreams. Tonight, she is dreaming about the Chestnut Orange Compote recipe she found in a Good Housekeeping magazine she knows her husband will enjoy.
